Six Thinking Hats

Origins of Western Thinking lie

with that ‘Greek Gang of three’:

Socrates, Plato and Aristotle!

It’s very critical and confrontational

thus so very non-constructive!

Raising only problem and difficulty

‘Opponents’ attack and counter-attack

defending only - one’s own point of view!

So Western Thinking is really quite negative!

Ed de Bono (1985) - Invented for bizz community

‘Six Thinking Hats’ Thinking Methodology.

Advantages are manifold:

Simple, robust, effective, efficient

time-saving and convenient.

When it’s used, meetings are faster

more constructive and productive.

It is Parallel Thinking:

which is focussed direction thinking!

It’s joint exploration in only one direction!

No battling or arguing involved in competition!

So it’s all very positive and not at all negative!

Let me demonstrate by way of example:

Imagine you and your friends are all blindfolded.

Now - an elephant is standing in front of you.

(An animal - just pretend - you’ve all never seen before.)

After being released, I ask you all randomly

to touch and feel and then describe the beast.

Descriptions from you all - you all beg to differ!

The latter essentially is non-parallel thinking!

Now let’s imagine the same scenario again.

But this time - I personally guide you all to touch

the same parts of the animal - at the same time.

Now descriptions from all - no longer beg to differ!

The latter essentially is parallel thinking!

In ‘Six Thinking Hats’ Thinking Methodology.

Each person in a group is asked

‘to wear’ the same coloured hat.

Then asked to think unidirectionally

and proffer suggestions constructively.

The Six Hats:

White Hat - Hat of Facts essentially.

Facts and figures - Anything factually.

What you know and what you want to know.

Red Hat - Hat of Emotion!

Feelings, gut instinct, hunches and intuition.

How do you feel?

Black Hat - ‘Devil’s Advocate’!

Caution and care to make you aware

of possible danger and potential despair.

Think like pessimists proffering

disadvantages, weaknesses and negatives!

Yellow Hat - Sunny Hat!

Illuminating and shining like bright sunlight!

Think like optimists proffering

advantages, benefits, strengths and positives.

Green Hat - Hat of Creation

Like plants and trees full of hope and life.

Think like Him - The Great Creator High Above

exploring new ideas, proposals and suggestions.

Blue Hat - Hat of Observation

Thinking about the thinking.

Setting agenda of the meeting

then directing and controlling

and summing ups with sit reps!

(of everyone’s parallel thinking)

Guidelines:

Blue hat: Like a book-end at start and end.

At Start: Define problem, goal and sequence.

At End: Sum up outcome, solution and next?

For specific thinking - Only one hat is worn.

Explore/problem solve - Sequence of hats worn.

Group Discipline: Very very important.

Timing: Allocate a given period of time.

(for each different hat worn)

Examples of Use:

Yellow Hat followed by Black Hat - Weighing up plusses and minuses.

Blue Hat followed by Red Hat - Set agenda then ask: ‘How one felt.’

(Perhaps reflecting upon the performance of a task - Happy or unhappy with outcome?)

Excellent way of problem-solving in a group constructively! I'm going to keep this in mind even for everyday use.

Hey Twin Hubbing Brother, You have something here that I need to think about. I will have to read this again, to absorb more of its meaning. The concepts you have written about are unique. Makes you wonder what color hat your professor, or boss is wearing. Wow! Keep producing these mind-boggling hubs and I'm sure they'll give your score 10 more points!

Very thought provoking and stimulating hub. I have worn so many colored hats in my time I am now colored blind and many of the hats don't fit anymore. So I have changed to wearing caps instead of hats, they allow my brain more freedom from restricted tight fitting hats:0)...thanks for the stimulation, love this hub. peace

Hi Twin Sis,

When I first came across this idea and read de Bono's book, it was a revelation for me. It's a great technique for sure and one I am very glad that I came across earlier rather than later in my life. It can really help you to focus your mind and get things thought through more throughly, efficiently and quickly. Try it out sometime!

Cheers and God bless you Twin Sis!

Saddlerider:

We have all worn many hats in our lives and some fitting better than others! Some we throw away to never wear again and some we keep on wearing throughout our lives. My father has a rather large collection of caps! lol Ones to protect his head! He has worn mostly the same hat throughout his life and it has stood him in fairly good stead so why change for another if it's good enough for him!

Cheers for sharing your thoughts my dear friend and God bless you!

Heard and read about this method, but never tried. Also, never had the instruction in such a precise and understandable way. Thanks, great information.

Good morning, Rich. I have never heard of this 'thinking process', but I am very intrigued. I'll have to borrow the book from the library for a good read this summer. Thanks for sharing this provocative hub. I like de Bono's positive energy!

How are you? I haven't seen you for awhile and have thought of you often. God Bless.

Hi Denise,

I hope you are well. As for me I am very well thanks. These last few months I have been busy. My wife is now in England with me and that's why I haven't been active at HP. Recently I started a blog to share my thoughts at http://www.thelifethinker.com/

and soon I hope to start writing some new material.

I bought this book for a friend of mine a few years back and I also got a copy for myself. If you can get hold of the book from the library then I highly recommend it. Ed de Bono's parallel thinking or Six Hats Thinking Process is an excellent thinking tool which encourages co-operative thinking rather than competitive thinking. It's a very simple and elegant thinking tool and something which can easily be taught to children. Hope you enjoy the book - I am sure you will!

Thanks for your kind comment and God bless.
