Life - Ups and Downs

Life is like a roller-coaster

as one young Irishman once sang

It’s full of ups and downs

exciting highs

and depressing lows

There be plenty peaks and troughs

with spectrum of mixed

emotions in between

It’s our attitude to life

that determines

life’s attitude towards us

Life begets whatever

we say or think of

it mirrors our attitude

and reflects it back

our thoughts

our words

our actions

so be careful what you think

say or do

cos otherwise

life might just

boomerang it back

straight at you

So always do your best

and try to remember

to remain positive and upbeat

when under dire stress

and feeling the heat

Learn to ride

the bad and the good

appreciate the best

while you can

and learn to accept

the very worst

Don’t always need

to understand why

something happens to you

but have serenity

to know - that sometimes

there's nothing you can do

So be brave

and do only

what you can do

and have the knowledge

to know the difference

between what you

can and cannot do

Learn to enjoy

the ride of life

with its many exhilarating highs

and sometimes depressing lows

Life’s just like that

I’m afraid - for if not

then how possibly

would it be - to differentiate

times - good and ‘bad’

So opposites in life exist

they have their raison d’etre

(their reason for being)

making us - appreciate

the true value of life

so next time you’re really happy

you’ll know why

cos you’ll understand that

very happy and very sad

must go together

like success and failure

so be very glad

cos now you know

why life’s full

of transient highs

and enduring lows
